Vermont Autumn Color Part 2

Ok, just checking in from Vermont and I have some new images to share! It’s been down right cold for the past few nights with temps in the mid to low thirties. The color in the Green Mountains between Killington and Granville is at about 70% right now and it is vibrant. My workshop starts tomorrow at noon, so I am just putting together the last items of the schedule right now and catching up on emails.

Also, my online Abstract Photography course in now live! check it out:

Enjoy! Joe

Chincoteague Winter Wildlife Workshop Announcement!

November 13 -15, 2009
Chincoteague Island, Virginia
Only 3 spots left!
Register today

With miles of unspoiled coastal beaches and islands, not to mention one of the premier East Coast birding and wildlife spots, Virginia’s Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge and surrounding historic fishing villages make for a remarkable workshop location. This area is known for its abundance of migratory birds and wild Ponies. We will be on location at the best time of the year to capture the bird migration and will have our fair share of shooting Great Blue Herons, Osprey, Great White Egrets, Snowy Egrets, Cattle Egrets and Tundra Swans just to name a few bird species.

Joseph Rossbach will guide and instruct on this unforgettable workshop experience. Not only will we get you to the best locations, you will receive individual attention to help you make the best possible images. In addition to field sessions in beautiful settings, we will also hold classroom and critique sessions during the weekend. This workshop is open to all levels of photographers.
Chincoteague and Assateague Islands are world famous for the wild ponies that roam the beaches and backwaters of the preserve and we will have a chance to photograph the ponies in great light. In addition to the wonderful wildlife, we will be able to photograph seashore scenics, marshes, macro subjects and coastal villages. If the light and weather conditions are right, we will also offer night time photography where we’ll photograph star trails and even do some light painting with high powered lamps.

West Virginia Autumn Color Photo Workshop

West Virginia holds a secret. Its mountains rival New England in tapestries of red, orange, gold, green and blue. And there is no other finer spot in all of West Virginia in the fall than the Monongahela National Forest. This is an amazing place for nature and landscape photography in any season, but in autumn it is truly awesome. From the fiery red covered heath barrens of Bear Rocks and Dolly Sods to swirling leaves in plunge pools of mighty waterfalls, this area is by far the mid-Atlantic’s best kept autumn secret. Let me take you on a journey to some of the best spots in the Monongahela for classic autumn color hot spots.

Checking in from Colorado

Just checking in from the Colorado high country after 14 days of camping and working the Colorado landscape with fellow photographer Ian Plant. Its been an amazing trip so far with some amazing light. The monsoon season is in full effect and the clouds each afternoon have been absolutely amazing. We have been working hard spending almost 16 hours a day in the field. We’ve been to Rocky Mountain National Park, Indian Peaks Wilderness, the mountains around Crested Butte, the Bisti Badlands, San Juan Mountains and Great Sand Dunes National Park. Tomorrow afternoon we need to be at Denver International Airport to pick up my client who is flying in from Virginia for a private workshop/tour in the San Juan Mountains and Great Sand Dunes National Park.

I will be writing a series of “Photo Journals” that will be posted on my new website when I return next week. The image above is from Great Sand Dunes National Park. Great Sand Dunes boosts the title of tallest dunes in the continental United States. We climbed almost 600 feet at an elevation of 8,600 feet to reach the dune crest for sunset. As you can see, the monsoon was in full effect providing some stunning light and cloud conditions.

Just a note, I still have spaces available for my Lotus Blooms and aquatic Gardens workshop next Monday, July 20th. Click here for more information.

Great Falls of the Potomac River is one of the scenic wonders of the Mid-Atlantic where kayakers and Great Blue Herons brave the thundering rapids of the Potomac River. we will have a weekend of grand landscape photography, wildflowers and waterfalls. Each morning we will head out to some of my secret locations along Mather Gorge. In the early morning, we will have a chance to photograph the wonderful display of wildflowers in Algonquian Park as well as small waterfalls and cascades along Difficult Run & Scott’s Run Preserve. As always the afternoon are filled with critiques and classroom work on post processing techniques. After a short break, we re enter the park to photograph Great Blue Herons and then finish each day chasing the light and clouds above thundering rapids and waterfalls in Mather Gorge.

Old Friends, Shenandoah National Park

Old Friends

Originally uploaded by Joseph Rossbach(

For years I have been attracted to this old snag in Shenandoah National Park and for years the light and clouds never worked out for me. On my last trip into the park on the last day of the workshop, I took the group down to this spot. As the sun rose it illuminated the underside of the clouds floating by. I shot at f22 to get the sunstar and used a 2 stop ND grad to open up some additional detail in the mountains. I cropped this shot to 4:5 ratio to remove the empty space on the right of the composition and better balance the photo.
