Raging Elekala Falls

by josephrossbachphoto

Thought I would share an image from my recent workshop in Blackwater Falls State Park. This is a shot of Elekala Falls after a full day of rain, night of freezing rain and then more snow in the morning. The conditions were absolutely miserable for making images. The spray blowing of the falls would coat everything down stream first in cold spray which would eventually freeze after a few seconds. This meant that I had to continually keep wiping the front element free of water and ice.

I was perched on a ice covered rock to get the position I needed to get the best angle on the falls and everytime I leaned around to wipe the front element it was a battle not to lose my grip and go falling into the ice water. Probably would have ended up being swept down all 5 falls and dropped right into the bottom of Blackwater Canyon.  Needless to say, glad that didn’t happen and turned out getting a pretty nice shot.

p.s., I had to shoot over 24 images just to get one that was free of spray on the lens!
