When the Light is Right!

by josephrossbachphoto

First of all, Happy New Year everyone!

My Friend and fellow colleague Ian Plant and myself were walking along Big Stone Beach last June waiting for the Horseshoe Crabs to emerge from the bay and beginning their ancient spawning ritual when a wicked thunderstorm moved through. We were about a mile up the beach from our cars and there was no shelter to be found as heavy rain and hail pummelled us and lightning strikes fell from the sky all around. We huddled down and decided to wait it out in hopes of a clearing, it was right at the golden hour. Just before we had decided we could bare no more, the light broke to the west and illuminated the storm clouds across the Delaware Bay. A rainbow appeared and I had only a few minutes to set up my camera and knock of 4 shots before the light faded and the rain once again began to fall.

Great light waits for no one. We wait for it. I wish everyone a happy and prosperous 2009.

Wonderful image Joe! I like the proportions of water, sky and beach, and of course the tonalities. Happy New Year.
